Hearing tests in the same suite as your ENT surgeon

Precision Hearing’s audiologists share our suite at 19 Kensington Street, so hearing assessment for children and adults can be done at the time of an ENT appointment and the results discussed with the surgeon straight away.

What can be tested

Full diagnostic hearing tests (pure tone audiometry) for adults and children, tympanometry to check the ear drum and middle ear pressure (the key test for glue ear), speech testing, and hearing aid assessment, fitting and adjustment. Precision Hearing is an independent audiology practice; the surgeons refer to them for testing and work with them on hearing implant and hearing aid decisions.

When a hearing test is needed

Gradual or sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, a child with glue ear or speech delay, before and after grommets or ear surgery, and when hearing aids or a hearing implant are being considered. Sudden hearing loss in one ear is an emergency — it should be tested and treated within days.

Hearing aids and implants

If a hearing aid is the right answer, Precision Hearing can assess and fit it. Where hearing aids are not enough, our surgeons assess for cochlear implants and bone conduction implants, with implant surgery and programming coordinated with the audiologists.

Common questions

Can I get a hearing test on the same day as my ENT appointment?

Often, yes. If it is already clear that a hearing test will be needed — for example, a referral for hearing loss, glue ear or tinnitus — please tell our team when you book, so a slot with Precision Hearing can be arranged on the day or, if that is not possible, beforehand so the results are ready for your consultation.

Do children need a referral for a hearing test?

A hearing test itself does not need a referral, but the ENT consultation does. With a referral from a GP or from one of our otolaryngologists, a Medicare rebate is available for the hearing test. Children referred for glue ear or hearing concerns usually have both on the same visit.

Is the hearing test bulk billed?

My hearing dropped suddenly — what should I do?

Treat it as urgent. Sudden hearing loss needs an urgent hearing test and clinical review within seven days — call any of our surgeons’ rooms and say that your hearing has dropped suddenly. Treatment works best when it is started early.
